Braille Notetakers

Personal braille notetakers are small, battery-operated devices designed for portability. With these devices, such as BrailleMate or Braille 'n Speak, the user enters information into the device using a braille keyboard. With most personal notetakers, the user has full word processing capabilities including creating, editing, and saving text documents. Additionally, most of these devices have internal translators, which can convert any document in braille or regular text. As a result, the user's document can be printed out in text using a regular ink printer, or in braille if the device is hooked up to a braille embosser. Personal notetakers often have many other features as well, such as calculators, and programs with which the user can set their calendar or complete their banking. Another important feature of personal notetakers is synthesized speech feedback. The user can easily review information they have just typed in by having it read aloud to them. In the same way, they can quickly review documents and records saved in the device. Usually the speed, and sometimes the tone, of the speech feedback can be set by the user.
