AT Literature

  • National Rehabilitation Information Center (NARIC)
  • NARIC collects and disseminates information about a variety of topics, including assistive technology. The results of federally-funded research projects on physical disabilities, mental retardation, emotional-behavioral disabilities, independent living, medical rehabilitation, special education, employment, assistive technology, and law alsoo are included. One option at the NARIC Home Page is ABLEDATA which is an information system that enables persons with disabilities to identify and locate assistive devices. The site also provides resource guides on disabilities and related topics. NARIC's Instant Disability Information Center is a database of research, literature, and sources related to disabilities. Information on how to contact REHABDATA is presented at the NARIC site. REHABDATA is a database that contains bibliographic records with abstracts of the materials in the NARIC library.

AT Organizations

  • Alliance for Technology Access (ATA)
  • The Alliance for Technology Access (ATA) is a network of community-based resource centers dedicated to providing information and support services to people with disabilities. At the site, the user can obtain information about joining ATA. A description and links to ATA resource centers and vendors are also available. More information about ATA can be found in its FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) section. The user may explore links to resources and web sites related to technology, disabilities, and the inclusion.
     

  • RESNA
  • The Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA) is an interdisciplinary association for the advancement of rehabilitation and AT. The RESNA site provides access to the AT JobBank for career opportunities in AT as well as a resource on accessible educational technology. It also has information about the AT Practitioner certification that it awards. The RESNA page also contains links to other Web and Gopher resources related to AT.

AT Research and Development

  • Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST)
  • CAST is a not-for-profit organization that uses technology to expand opportunities for all people, especially those with disabilities. Major areas: Universal Design for Learning; National Center on Accessing the General Curriculum, Web Accessibility (Bobby)

  • Quality Indicators for Assistive Technology (QIAT)
  • The QIAT Web Site has a dual purpose. First, it provides access to the work of the QIAT Consortium in the form of Quality Indicators for Assistive Technology Services in School Settings. Second, it provides forums for participation in the work of the Consortium and engagement in collegial conversations around the work.

Compilations of Products and Resource Links

  • AbilityHub
  • AbilityHub is an AT-related Web site for people with a disability who find operating a computer difficult. This site directs people to a wide array of adaptive equipment and alternative methods available for accessing computers. Computer access topics include augmentative communication, mouse alternatives, keyboard alternatives, switch access, text-to-speech software, speech recognition, and others.

  • Disability Related Products and Services
  • This is a segment of Jim Lubin's disABILITY Information and Resources site that provides links to companies that provide products and services for persons with disabilities. Visit the Main Page of this site for a comprehensive array of information on a variety of topics related to disabilities.

  • Disabilities Resources, Inc.
  • Disabilities Resources, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that provides information about resources for independent living. The Disabilities Resource Monthly (DRM) WebWatcher is a listing of disability-related resources on a national or international level. The DRM's Regional Resource Directory provides links to services on a state or local level. The site also presents information on making libraries more accessible at the Librarians' Connection page. Publications and services from Disabilities Resources can be accessed including a separate section on inclusion.

  • DREAMMS for Kids, Inc.
  • DREAMMS for Kids, Inc. is a non-profit parent and professional service agency that specializes in AT related research, development, and information dissemination. The user may order tech paks or subscribe to DIRECTIONS: Technology in Special Education. The site includes AT product information from vendors for adaptive devices and educational software. Links to government sites, companies, organizations, and universities for additional information related to AT are available. The user may also link to The Assistive Technology Funding and Systems Change Project (ATFSCP) which provides training, technical assistance, and information on AT funding and systems change issues nationwide or to the National Information Center for Children and Youth with Disabilities (NICHCY) which provides information on disabilities and disability-related issues to families, educators, and other professionals.

  • IBM Accessibility Center
  • The IBM Accessibility Center site provides product information on assistive devices and software tools that make the computer more accessible and friendly to people with disabilities. The site also links to Internet resources related to disabilities and assistive technology (AT). Web accessibility information and a FTP site for downloading information are available through the IBM site.

  • Trace Center
  • The Trace Center is an interdisciplinary research, development, and resource center located at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. It provides a publications and software catalog on-line about the use of technology to make the environment more accessible to people with disabilities. The site also includes a Cooperative Electronic Library with disability documents and resources. Another page presents information on designing an accessible world.

Searchable AT Product and Information Databases

  • ABLEDATA
  • This database contains over 19,000 currently available products from over 2,000 different companies. Each product record contains a detailed description of the product as well as price, manufacturer and distributor information. You will also find information on non-commercial prototypes, customized and one-of-a-kind products, and do-it-yourself designs. To select products most appropriate to your needs, we suggest combining ABLEDATA information with professional advice, product evaluations, and hands-on product trials.

  • Apple Computer's Solutions for People with Special Needs
  • The Apple site provides information about ways that Macintosh computer systems can be used to meet the needs of people with special needs. Third party solutions and a search engine also are provided to obtain additional information. Iniformation is presented about solutions in the areas of vision, hearing, physical/motor, literacy and learning, and language and communication.

  • assistivetech.net
  • Global assistive technology explorer providing up-to-date, thorough information on assistive technology, adaptive environments, and community resources.

  • Closing the Gap Resource Directory
  • The Closing The Gap Resource Directory is a guide to computer-related products and services available to assist children and adults with disabilities. It contains prices, descriptions and manufacturer contact information for nearly 2,000 products determined appropriate for use in special education and rehabilitation, as well as an extensive list of organizations that serve individuals with special needs.

  • California's AT Network
  • California's AT Network is dedicated to expanding the accessibility of tools, resources and technology that will help increase independence, improve personal productivity and enhance the quality of life for all Californians. The 'Services and Resources' link provides numerous AT Network Links to other sites of interest on the World Wide Web.

  • Wisconsin Assistive Technology Initiative
  • The Wisconsin Assistive Technology Initiative is a statewide project funded by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction to help all school districts develop or improve their assistive technology services. The site contains short articles, WATI products list, WATI assessment forms, and many other topics.
